What Is an Edge Digital Twin?
An edge digital twin is a lightweight instance of a digital twin that runs on edge computing hardware, such as industrial PCs, gateways, or embedded controllers, located close to the physical asset it represents. It receives sensor data from the asset, updates its virtual model in real time, and supports predictive analytics and control decisions locally. Because processing happens at the source, the twin keeps working when network connectivity is limited or lost.
How Edge Digital Twins Work
An edge twin processes sensor data on the device that collects it, rather than sending every reading to a central server. This reduces latency, so control loops can respond within milliseconds. Models are often compressed to fit the memory and power limits of edge hardware. Edge twins can also send summarized results to a cloud platform for fleet-wide analysis.

Edge twins need enough processor cores, memory, and storage to run the model and the data pipeline at the same time.
