What a Graphic Card Does in an Industrial Computer

A graphic card (also called a GPU, graphics adapter or video card) is an add-in board or integrated engine that handles image rendering, video decode/encode and increasingly parallel compute workloads. In industrial computing the question is rarely about gaming — it is about how many displays you can drive, what resolution and refresh rate you need, whether you must decode multiple camera streams in real time, and whether an application such as machine vision, CAD, medical imaging or AI inference needs GPU acceleration. Most industrial PCs and mini PCs today rely on processor-integrated graphics, while systems that need more muscle accept a discrete card through a PCIe expansion slot.

Integrated vs Discrete Graphics

Integrated graphics live on the CPU package and share system memory. Intel's 12th-generation Core processors, for example, ship with Intel UHD Graphics or Iris Xe Graphics, while entry-level silicon such as the Intel N100 and N150 uses a smaller UHD Graphics block. Integrated graphics are fanless-friendly, low power and perfectly adequate for digital signage, thin client sessions, POS, kiosk and multi-monitor office workloads. Discrete cards plug into a PCIe slot, carry their own GDDR memory and dedicated display outputs, and deliver far higher throughput — but they add heat, power draw and physical depth that a sealed, fanless chassis may not tolerate.
