An industrial PC (IPC) is a computing platform engineered to run continuously in environments that would quickly degrade a consumer desktop or office mini PC. Instead of prioritizing slim looks and low cost, an industrial computer is designed around three requirements: sustained operation (often 24 hours a day, 7 days a week), tolerance of heat, dust, vibration and electrical noise, and long-term availability of the same hardware so that a machine builder or plant can standardise on one model for years.
The most common modern form factor is a compact, fanless box PC. Because there are no moving parts inside — no cooling fan, no spinning disk — dust cannot be drawn into the chassis and there is nothing mechanical to wear out. Heat is conducted away through an aluminium or steel enclosure, so the unit can be sealed, mounted on a DIN rail or panel, and placed close to the machinery it controls. Wide-range DC inputs, watchdog timers, and BIOS-level auto power-on settings let these systems restart themselves unattended after a power interruption.

When specifying an industrial PC, the specification sheet should be read differently from a consumer one.
