What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer engineered for continuous, unattended operation in environments where a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC would quickly fail. Instead of prioritising slim looks and low cost, an IPC is designed around thermal headroom, mechanical durability, wide input power tolerance, long product life cycles and rich legacy I/O. Typical traits include a fanless or filtered-airflow chassis, wide-temperature components, protection against dust and vibration, DIN-rail or wall/panel mounting options, watchdog timers, and hardware interfaces such as RS-232/RS-485 serial ports, digital I/O and dual Gigabit Ethernet that modern consumer machines have largely dropped.
The reason serial ports and rugged chassis still matter is that industrial equipment moves slowly. PLCs, CNC controllers, weighbridges, energy meters, barcode scanners, laboratory instruments and legacy machine tools often speak RS-232 or RS-485, and a plant controller is expected to run the same software stack for 7–10 years. An IPC bridges that gap: it presents modern processors, modern operating systems and modern networking to software, while still talking to equipment designed decades ago.
