Ind - Industrial Mini PCs & Fanless Industrial Computers

What Is an Industrial Computer?

An industrial computer is a ruggedized computing system built to run continuously in environments where a standard office PC would struggle — factory floors, control cabinets, kiosks, vehicles, warehouses and outdoor enclosures. Unlike consumer desktops, industrial PCs are designed around three priorities: reliability, long-term availability and I/O flexibility. They typically use fanless cooling, wide-temperature components, watchdog timers, wide-range DC power inputs and industrial-grade storage, so they can operate 24×7 without dust ingress or mechanical fan failure.

Key Specifications to Look For

When specifying an industrial PC, the processor, memory and storage determine what workloads it can handle, while the enclosure and I/O determine where it can be deployed.

Specification Typical Options Why It Matters
Processor Intel® Celeron®, Intel® N-series, Intel® Core™ i3/i5 (10th–14th Gen) Balance of performance and power draw
Cores / Threads 4 to 12 cores Multitasking, SCADA, edge analytics
Memory 4 GB to 64 GB DDR4/DDR5 Headroom for HMI, databases, VMs
Storage 128 GB to 1 TB SSD Vibration-resistant, no moving parts
Cooling Fanless (passive heatsink) No dust ingress, no fan to fail
Serial I/O RS-232 / RS-485, DB9 ports PLCs, meters, legacy equipment
Networking Dual Gigabit Ethernet Network separation, redundancy
Power 12V–24V DC input Vehicle, DIN-rail and cabinet power
Mounting DIN-rail, VESA, wall Fits control panels and kiosks
Operating System Windows 11 Pro / IoT, Linux, DOS, without OS Matches your software stack

Common Applications

Industrial computers are used across manufacturing and infrastructure. Typical roles include SCADA and HMI terminals, machine vision and inspection stations, data acquisition gateways that aggregate readings from PLCs and sensors over RS-485 or Modbus, digital signage and kiosk controllers, edge gateways that pre-process data before sending it to the cloud, and test and measurement benches in electronics production. Because these systems often sit in sealed cabinets with limited airflow, fanless designs and wide-input DC power are usually mandatory rather than optional.

Fanless vs. Fan-Cooled Industrial PCs

Fan-cooled systems offer higher sustained performance but draw in dust, require filter maintenance and have a mechanical part that eventually wears out. Fanless systems dissipate heat through an aluminium chassis, which makes them ideal for dusty, oily or humid environments and for installations where service access is difficult. For most control-room, kiosk and gateway deployments, a fanless industrial PC with a modern low-power Intel® processor delivers more than enough compute while dramatically reducing maintenance.

Choosing the Right Configuration

Start with the software: check whether your application requires Windows, Linux or a real-time OS, then size the CPU and RAM accordingly. HMI and gateway roles are comfortable on 4–8 GB with a Celeron® or N-series chip. SCADA servers, vision systems and multi-application edge nodes benefit from an Intel® Core™ i3 or i5 with 16 GB or more. Confirm your serial, USB, HDMI and Ethernet requirements before ordering, and choose a DC input voltage that matches your cabinet supply. Finally, consider whether you need a specific OS image, a serial-port configuration, or a no-OS unit you will image yourself.

Thinvent's Industrial Computing Range

Thinvent manufactures industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs for deployment worldwide. The IPC3 series combines Intel® Core™ i3-1215U processors (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with up to 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB SSD, fanless operation, 12V DC input and optional quad DB9 serial ports for PLC and instrumentation connectivity. Operating system options include Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT Value, Thinux™ Embedded Linux, DOS and no-OS configurations, so the same hardware platform can be standardized across an entire plant regardless of the software running on each node.
