What Is a Mini Computer?
A mini computer is a complete desktop-class system built into a chassis small enough to mount behind a monitor, inside a kiosk, or on a DIN rail. Unlike a traditional tower, a mini computer packages the processor, memory, storage, networking and video output onto a palm-sized board, drawing far less power and generating far less heat. Modern mini computers run the same operating systems as full desktops — Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, Ubuntu Linux and embedded Linux distributions — so software compatibility is rarely a concern.
What Determines the Cost of a Mini Computer
Cost is driven almost entirely by four variables: the processor, the amount of RAM, the storage capacity, and the grade of the chassis. Entry-level systems use Intel Celeron or Intel N-series processors (N95, N100, N150) with 4–8 GB of memory, which is enough for browsing, billing, digital signage and thin-client duties. Mid-range and high-performance models move up to Intel Core i3, i5 and 12th–14th generation processors with 16–64 GB of DDR4/DDR5 memory and NVMe SSD storage, which suits CAD, video walls, machine vision and virtualisation.
Chassis grade matters just as much as the silicon. A consumer mini PC with a plastic case and a small fan is inexpensive but struggles in a dusty workshop or a 50 °C cabinet. An industrial mini computer with a fanless aluminium heatsink body, wide-range DC input, watchdog timer and surge protection costs more upfront but avoids downtime, filter cleaning and premature replacement.
