PC Barebone

What Is a Barebone PC?

A barebone PC is a partially assembled computer that ships with the chassis, motherboard, processor, cooling solution and power circuitry already installed, but without some user-selectable components such as memory, storage or an operating system. The buyer completes the build by adding the missing parts, which keeps the initial cost lower and allows the exact RAM, SSD and OS combination that a deployment actually needs. Barebones are popular with system integrators, OEMs, IT teams and hobbyists who want a known-good platform without paying for components they would replace anyway.

What Comes in the Box — and What You Add

The exact contents vary by model, but a typical barebone includes the enclosure, mainboard with soldered or socketed CPU, heatsink or fanless thermal design, power input and I/O ports. What is usually left out is RAM (SO-DIMM or DIMM modules), mass storage (M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD/HDD), the operating system, and sometimes the power adapter or wireless module. Before ordering, confirm the supported memory type and maximum capacity, the number and length of M.2 or SATA bays, the video outputs, and whether the OS licence is included or must be purchased separately.

Item Usually Included in a Barebone Usually Added by the Buyer
Chassis and cooling Yes —
Motherboard and CPU Yes —
RAM Rarely Yes — match DDR generation and speed
Storage (M.2 / SATA) Rarely Yes — check key type and length
Operating system No Yes — Windows, Linux or none
Power adapter Sometimes Verify before ordering
Wi-Fi / cellular module Sometimes Depends on model

Why Choose a Barebone Instead of a Fully Configured Unit

Barebones give you control over the bill of materials, which matters when a project specifies a particular brand of industrial-grade SSD, a fixed memory size across a fleet, or a validated OS image. They also simplify spare-parts planning: you stock one platform and a small set of modules rather than many finished SKUs. For OEMs, a barebone can be branded and configured as your own appliance. If you would rather not assemble anything, a fully configured mini PC or industrial PC with RAM, storage and OS pre-installed removes that step entirely — both approaches are available, so choose based on volume, technical capability and warranty requirements.

Applications and Use Cases

Barebones are used as digital signage players, kiosk controllers, thin client terminals, edge gateways, laboratory instruments, machine-vision nodes and point-of-sale terminals. Fanless, ventless chassis suit dusty workshops, food processing areas and outdoor cabinets where a fan would pull in contaminants. Systems destined for 24/7 operation benefit from wide-temperature components and a power supply matched to the site. When specifying, match the processor tier to the workload: entry Celeron and Intel N-series chips handle kiosks and thin client duties, while Core i3 and i5 platforms with more cores and higher memory ceilings are better for multi-application edge servers and vision workloads.

Thinvent Products Available as Barebones and Configured Systems

Thinvent builds industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs for deployments worldwide, and can supply units as barebones or fully configured with memory, storage and operating system installed. Platforms span Intel Celeron and N-series processors through Core i3 and i5 options, with fanless industrial chassis, dual Ethernet, multiple HDMI outputs, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB-C connectivity, and support for Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux, embedded Linux or no OS at all. If you need a specific memory, storage or serial-port combination, tell us the target workload and we will recommend the matching configuration.
