What Is a Rack-Mount PC?
A rack-mount PC is a computer designed to be bolted into a standard 19-inch equipment rack using mounting brackets, rails or a rack shelf, rather than sitting on a desk or being wall-mounted. Racks are the backbone of control rooms, server halls, telecom cabinets, broadcast studios, test benches and factory floors, so putting the computer inside the same cabinet as the PLCs, switches, UPS units and signal equipment keeps cabling short, protects the hardware from dust and foot traffic, and makes servicing easy.
Rack Units and Physical Standards
Rack hardware follows the EIA-310 / IEC 60297 convention, where 1U equals 44.45 mm (1.75 in) of vertical height. A rack-mount PC usually appears as a 1U, 2U or 4U chassis with front handles and ventilation slots, or as a smaller industrial computer carried on a fixed rack shelf. Depth matters as much as height: shallow-depth cabinets, portable flight cases and wall-mount enclosures often cannot accept a deep server chassis, which is why compact industrial PCs are frequently mounted on trays or side panels instead.
