What "Server COM" Usually Means
A search for a "server COM" configuration almost always points to one of two needs: a host machine (server or industrial computer) that exposes one or more COM ports — the legacy name for RS-232/RS-485 serial interfaces — or a serial device server that puts physical COM ports on the network so remote systems can talk to legacy equipment. In both cases the goal is the same: keep industrial, retail, telecom or laboratory hardware with a DB9 connector communicating reliably with modern software, without abandoning the equipment already installed on site.
COM Port Basics and Key Specifications
COM ports are named sequentially (COM1, COM2, COM3…). Each is mapped to a hardware UART (16550-compatible or better) and configured by parameters such as baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits and flow control. RS-232 uses single-ended signalling and is typically good for cable runs up to about 15 m at lower baud rates, while RS-485 is differential and supports multi-drop buses running to roughly 1200 m. Industrial deployments also care about ESD and surge protection on the port, optical isolation between the logic side and the field wiring, and screw-lock or strain-relieved DB9 connectors that will not vibrate loose.
