Zero Client Manufacturers

What Is a Zero Client?

A zero client is a stripped-down endpoint device that contains no local operating system, no local storage, and no application software. Unlike a thin client, which runs a lightweight OS and can execute some local tasks, a zero client functions purely as a display and input terminal. It connects to a centralized server or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and receives its entire desktop session over the network. Because there is nothing on the device to configure, patch, or corrupt, zero clients are among the simplest and most secure endpoints available for managed computing environments.

How Zero Clients Work

A zero client typically relies on a dedicated protocol to deliver a remote desktop session. Common protocols include PCoIP, HDX, Blast Extreme, and RDP, each associated with a virtualization platform such as VMware Horizon, Citrix, or Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. The device boots in seconds, establishes a secure session with the host, and streams pixels and input events in real time. Hardware requirements are modest: a low-power processor, a small amount of RAM for the session client, video decoding capability, and network connectivity. Many zero clients are fanless, which means no moving parts, no dust ingress, and long service life.

Local OS None Lightweight OS Full OS

Choosing a Zero Client Manufacturer

When evaluating zero client manufacturers, buyers typically look at several factors. Protocol support matters most: the device must be certified or compatible with the virtualization stack already in use. Hardware reliability is next, since these endpoints often run continuously in offices, call centers, clinics, and factory floors. Fanless designs with wide-temperature tolerance and solid-state storage are preferred for dusty or hot environments. Manageability is also key, as fleet-wide firmware updates and configuration should be possible from a central console. Finally, manufacturers that offer a range of form factors, from compact mini PCs to all-in-one units, make it easier to standardize across an organization.

Use Cases and Applications

Zero clients are widely deployed in environments where control, security, and low maintenance costs matter. Contact centers use them to give agents a consistent desktop while keeping customer data on central servers. Healthcare providers rely on them at nursing stations where hygiene, silence, and reliability are important. Educational institutions use them in labs and libraries to simplify imaging and reduce downtime. Manufacturing and logistics operations deploy them on shop floors, often with fanless, dust-resistant hardware. In each case, the endpoint holds no sensitive data, so a lost or stolen device does not become a data breach.

Thinvent's Products for Zero and Thin Client Deployments

Thinvent manufactures a range of compact, fanless computing devices suited to centralized desktop environments. Our mini PCs and thin clients run Intel® processors with options for Windows, Linux, or embedded operating systems, and can be configured without local storage or with minimal storage depending on the deployment model. They are designed for continuous operation, quiet fanless cooling, and straightforward fleet management. For organizations standardizing on VDI or remote desktop services, Thinvent's all-in-one PCs and mini PCs provide dependable endpoints that keep data centralized and endpoints simple.
