How Do I Reset Setti

How Do I Reset Settings on a Mini PC or Thin Client?

Resetting settings on a mini PC, thin client, industrial computer or all-in-one PC depends on what you want to reset: the operating system, the BIOS/UEFI firmware, or the device's management configuration. There are three common levels of reset, and each serves a different purpose.

1. Operating system reset. On Windows 11 Pro, open Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC. You can choose "Keep my files" (removes apps and settings but preserves personal data) or "Remove everything" (a clean reinstall). On Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS or Thinux embedded Linux, a reset usually means reinstalling the OS from a bootable USB drive, or restoring a saved system image. Many deployments keep a golden image so a device can be re-flashed in minutes.

2. BIOS/UEFI reset. Restart the device and press the setup key (commonly Del or F2) during boot. Inside the firmware menu, look for Load Setup Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults, or Reset to Default. This clears custom boot order, power-on behaviour and hardware settings. If the system will not boot at all, power off, open the chassis, locate the CMOS battery or clear-CMOS jumper, and follow the board documentation to reset the firmware.

3. Management or thin-client configuration reset. Thin clients often store connection profiles, server addresses and user policies in a local management agent. A configuration reset restores factory defaults without touching the OS. This is typically done from the device's local menu, a management console, or by re-applying a configuration profile from your central server.

Reset Type What It Clears Typical Method When to Use
OS reset Apps, settings, user data (optional) Windows Recovery / OS reinstall Slow, corrupted or misconfigured OS
BIOS/UEFI reset Boot order, firmware settings Setup key → Load Defaults, or clear CMOS Device will not boot, hardware changes
Management reset Connection profiles, policies Local menu or management console Reassigning a thin client to a new server

Before any reset, back up important data and note down network settings, server addresses and licence keys. For fleets, prefer a central management tool so you can push a clean configuration to many devices at once instead of visiting each one. Always keep a known-good OS image and firmware version on hand so recovery is quick and repeatable.

Thinvent Products and Easy Reset

Thinvent mini PCs, thin clients, industrial PCs and all-in-one PCs are built for exactly this kind of maintenance. Models such as the Aero Mini PC ship with Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, DOS, Ubuntu Linux or Thinux embedded Linux, so you can choose the reset path that matches your deployment. Every unit uses standard Intel processors, DDR4 memory and SSD storage, making re-imaging straightforward, and Thinvent's thin clients and industrial systems support centralised configuration so a factory reset across a fleet takes minutes rather than hours.
