What Is an Industrial Computer?
An industrial computer (often shortened to IPC) is a computing platform engineered for continuous operation in environments where a consumer desktop or standard mini PC would quickly fail. Instead of being optimised for a quiet office desk, an industrial PC is designed around a different set of priorities: 24/7 duty cycles, resistance to dust and airborne particulates, tolerance of vibration and shock, stable operation across a wide ambient temperature range, and long-term availability of the same model so that machines and production lines do not need re-qualification every few months.
The practical differences show up in the enclosure and the I/O. Industrial systems typically use a fanless chassis — often extruded aluminium or sheet metal with a wide operating temperature rating — so there are no moving parts to clog with dust or to wear out. They usually accept a wide DC input (commonly 9–36 V or a fixed 12 V industrial adapter), support DIN-rail or wall mounting, and offer legacy connectivity such as multiple DB9 serial ports for RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 devices, plus digital I/O and isolated inputs on some models. Storage and memory are usually socketed so they can be serviced or upgraded in the field.
